READING, PA — FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (d/b/a Met-Ed), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), is constructing a new substation off Route 422 in South Annville Township to supply electricity to large warehouse facilities in a rapidly expanding industrial area.
The substation will enhance reliability for more than 2,100 Met-Ed customers in Annville, South Annville Township, and Palmyra, where rising demand for electricity is driven by growing commercial developments. The project will provide a backup feed to maintain power during outages or maintenance, improving service for nearby residential and business customers.
“Our new substation will provide the critical infrastructure necessary to energize an enormous shipping hub in the busy motor freight corridor encompassing Interstates 78 and 81 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike,” said John Hawkins, FirstEnergy’s President, Pennsylvania. “It will also provide operational flexibility for our local electric grid to better serve our residential and business customers in these fast-growing communities.”
Construction began in spring 2024 and is expected to finish by early 2025. Crews have already installed steel structures, circuit breakers, and electrical cables, with the transformer—a key component of the substation—scheduled for delivery in December.
The substation will feature two power lines initially, with one set to serve the Eagle Point Logistics Center next to the site and the other supplying a nearby warehouse at Clear Springs Logistics Park. Both lines will be expanded, and a third line will be added in the future to meet growing power needs.
The project aligns with FirstEnergy’s Energize365 initiative, a grid modernization program that includes $26 billion in investments from 2024 to 2028. This effort aims to build a smarter, more reliable grid and accommodate advancements like electric vehicles, clean energy, and the electrification of homes and businesses.
