WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the continuation of nighttime construction activities aimed at enhancing safety and infrastructure on Interstate 476 (Blue Route) and the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76). The extensive project, spanning nearly 17 miles, seeks to address critical roadway and structural improvements between the I-76 interchange in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, and the I-95 interchange in Ridley Township, Delaware County.
Scheduled for the week of December 16 through December 20, the construction will occur at night to minimize disruption during peak travel hours. Lane closures will be in place from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning to accommodate the ongoing work. Specific details of the closures include the following:
- I-476, northbound and southbound, between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges, will see lane closures for tree trimming, guiderail replacement, and inlet updates.
- I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), eastbound and westbound, between Matsonford Road and I-476, will experience lane closures for essential bridge repairs.
Motorists are advised to anticipate significant delays and backups when traveling through these construction zones. To mitigate potential disruptions, travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their commutes.
This ambitious project encompasses a comprehensive array of upgrades. PennDOT’s contractor is undertaking critical tasks such as milling and overlaying travel lanes and shoulders, repairing 49 structures, addressing rock slope stabilization issues, and improving 21 stormwater management basins. Additional work includes repairing sound walls, replacing deteriorated inlets, installing updated guiderails, signage, rumble strips, and new pavement markings.
The objective of this extensive initiative is twofold. First, it aims to extend the design life and enhance the ride quality of the interstate. Second, it addresses roadside elements such as drainage systems, guiderails, and signage currently in poor condition. By modernizing these components, PennDOT seeks to improve motorist safety and optimize roadway functionality in the years to come.
