PHILADELPHIA, PA — With millions of passengers expected to take to the skies during the holiday season, the FBI Philadelphia Field Office has issued an advisory encouraging vigilance in airports and aboard aircraft. Highlighting the agency’s efforts to ensure the safety of travelers, the advisory emphasizes the importance of recognizing and reporting criminal activity.

During peak travel periods, the FBI prioritizes investigations into federal crimes committed onboard aircraft. These incidents, which can jeopardize passenger and crew safety, include various offenses under the agency’s jurisdiction. Common crimes include sexual misconduct, such as sexual assault, indecent exposure, and inappropriate proposals involving minors. Physical assaults, whether through hitting, spitting, or unwanted contact, are also areas of concern, as is interference with flight crew members through intimidation, threats, or physical aggression. Theft and bomb threats, whether occurring in airports or during flights, also fall under the FBI’s purview.

At international airports, the FBI investigates incidents of violence against individuals or property if U.S. nationals are involved, as well as offenses involving airport security staff or airline employees. These violations often occur during security screenings or at the boarding gate and are treated with the utmost seriousness.

To address these threats effectively, the agency deploys Airport Liaison Agents (ALAs) across nearly 450 U.S. aviation facilities regulated by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). ALAs serve as a critical response resource for reported crimes, particularly those occurring aboard aircraft, which fall under the FBI’s unique investigative authority.

Wayne A. Jacobs, special agent in charge of the FBI Philadelphia Field Office, emphasized the need for public awareness. “As you travel this holiday season, whether on a flight or at the airport, stay alert to those who may try to disrupt the holiday spirit,” Jacobs stated. “If you are a victim of a crime or witness one, we urge you to report it immediately to your flight crew, airport police, or the FBI. Your vigilance can help keep the holiday season safe for everyone.”

Travelers are urged to remain mindful of their surroundings and act promptly when encountering suspicious or criminal behavior. Incidents should be reported to flight crew members, airport authorities, or law enforcement officials at the earliest opportunity. Additionally, individuals can contact the FBI directly by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324) or submitting information online at tips.fbi.gov.

This advisory comes as a timely reminder during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, underlining the collective responsibility of authorities and the public to maintain safety and security. By working together, passengers and officials can ensure that holiday travels remain smooth and safe for all.
