CHESTER, PA — With Pennsylvania set to hold pivotal judicial elections in 2025, advocacy organizations are taking steps to ensure voters are informed and engaged. A virtual townhall, titled “Why Courts Matter 101,” will take place on Thursday, December 19, 2024, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM via Zoom. This event aims to educate the public about the crucial role of courts and the significance of judicial elections.
Pennsylvania is one of only seven states that elects judges and justices through partisan elections. The upcoming 2025 elections will include decisions on three Pennsylvania Supreme Court seats, one Commonwealth Court seat, and one Superior Court seat. Additionally, voters will participate in nonpartisan judicial retention elections, where they will decide whether sitting judges should remain on the bench.
Recognizing the importance of civic engagement in these elections, Why Courts Matter – Pennsylvania and the New Pennsylvania Project are hosting the virtual townhall. Why Courts Matter – Pennsylvania is an advocacy initiative dedicated to protecting the independence of state and federal courts and educating voters about judicial accountability. The New Pennsylvania Project, a nonpartisan organization, focuses on voter registration, education, and mobilization to encourage greater civic participation.
The event will feature an esteemed panel of speakers, including Keith Thirion, interim co-president and vice president of Strategy at the Alliance for Justice; Mohan Seshadri, executive director at the Asian Pacific Islander Political Alliance; and Kadida Kenner, founding CEO of the New Pennsylvania Project. Each will share insights on the importance of fair and independent courts, as well as the role voters play in safeguarding judicial impartiality.
The virtual townhall seeks to inform and inspire Pennsylvanians to take an active role in the judicial election process. Organizers emphasize the critical impact state and federal courts have on issues that affect communities daily and underscore the power of an informed electorate to uphold judicial integrity.
Registration for the event is required and can be completed online. For additional details, Pennsylvanians are encouraged to participate in this timely and educational discussion ahead of the elections next year.
