PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced plans for bridge deck repairs on westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Southwest Philadelphia, scheduled to take place on Monday, December 16. This work will require lane closures and may significantly affect traffic flow in the area.
From 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on the designated date, the right lane of westbound I-76 will close between the Vare Avenue on-ramp and South Street off-ramp. While all ramps to and from the expressway will remain open, periodic stoppages will occur on the ramp from Vare Avenue to the westbound lanes of I-76. Drivers navigating through the affected areas should anticipate backups and are encouraged to avoid the work zone if possible.
These bridge deck repairs are part of a targeted effort to address deteriorating concrete on the structures that carry the Schuylkill Expressway over multiple local routes, including Reed Street, Wharton Street, Grays Ferry Avenue, as well as the Schuylkill River and CSX rail tracks. By addressing these issues, PennDOT aims to maintain the structural integrity and safety of the roadway for the long term.
The operation is contingent on favorable weather conditions. PennDOT advises drivers to remain alert, exercise caution in the work zone, and consider alternate routes to minimize delays during this essential maintenance activity.
