WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced a robust beginning to the 2025 Marketplace Open Enrollment Period, with over 988,000 new consumers signing up for health insurance plans. This builds on last year’s record-setting enrollment of 21.4 million individuals, which drove the uninsured rate in the U.S. to a historic low.
To date, more than 5.3 million people have selected coverage, including nearly 4.4 million returning consumers actively renewing their plans. CMS expects this trajectory to lead to another record-breaking year for plan selections, further solidifying the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) impact on expanding access to affordable, high-quality health care. Consumers currently enrolled in Marketplace plans will generally have their coverage renewed automatically for 2025 if no action is taken, though CMS encourages active plan reviews to ensure optimal choice.
“Through the Marketplace, millions of Americans seeking health coverage continue to find a high-quality plan at a low cost,” stated Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure added, “These numbers reflect the strong and ongoing demand that individuals and families have for affordable, high-quality health care coverage, and we expect this year will set another plan selection record.”
Significant Financial Assistance Through Policy Initiatives
The Biden-Harris Administration, bolstered by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, has played a critical role in expanding financial assistance and improving affordability. Thanks to these measures, four out of five HealthCare.gov users can find plans for $10 or less per month after tax credits. This expanded financial assistance, extended through 2025, has broadened access to health insurance for previously ineligible individuals, further reducing barriers to coverage.
For plan year 2025, CMS has enhanced the Marketplace platform to improve navigation and user experience. Consumers now have greater plan choices, bolstered by policies designed to ensure comprehensive, cost-effective coverage tailored to their needs.
Enrollment Deadlines and Key Dates
Marketplace Open Enrollment on HealthCare.gov runs until January 15, 2025. Consumers who select plans by midnight on December 15 will have coverage that begins on January 1. CMS encourages individuals to act promptly to secure affordable health insurance and take advantage of available tax credits during this critical period.
The Marketplace Open Enrollment initiative continues to underscore federal efforts to prioritize health equity, access, and affordability, demonstrating the ACA’s enduring impact on millions of Americans.
