PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA — ECRI has announced its acquisition of The Just Culture Company, a leader in workplace culture transformation across high-risk industries. The move aims to bolster ECRI’s Total System Safety (TSS) approach by integrating the principles of “just culture” into its strategy to enhance healthcare safety and reduce preventable harm.
The Just Culture Company specializes in fostering fair and balanced accountability within organizations by applying its proprietary model through advisory services, education, and coaching. This approach emphasizes a shift from punishing errors to learning from them, promoting workforce collaboration and system improvements.
Marcus Schabacker, PhD, president and CEO of ECRI, remarked on the urgency of addressing preventable patient harm through proactive measures. “Alarming rates of preventable harm are inflicted on patients every day. By offering Just Culture programs throughout ECRI’s global network, we can prevent harm before it happens,” he stated.
The acquisition aligns with ECRI’s efforts to address systemic failures in healthcare, including hierarchical systems and cultures that discourage staff from raising safety concerns. By implementing “just culture” principles, ECRI aims to create safer environments for patients while reducing staff burnout and stress.
David Marx, CEO of The Just Culture Company, highlighted the benefits of a learning-focused system, contrasting it with traditional “shame and blame” practices. The organization has worked extensively with healthcare providers, health departments, and insurers to improve safety by enhancing workforce culture from leadership to frontline staff.
Schabacker described the acquisition as a critical milestone in advancing healthcare safety. “Only through a cultural transformation can we adopt a completely new way of supporting and collaborating with our healthcare workforce,” he said.
This acquisition reinforces ECRI’s commitment to global healthcare improvement by addressing the root causes of harm and inefficiency, further integrating evidence-based, data-informed solutions into its mission to transform patient safety.
