BOALSBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) has unveiled plans for a significant capital project to modernize the Pennsylvania Military Museum. The initiative will include extensive upgrades to infrastructure, aimed at preserving the museum’s invaluable collections and improving visitor experiences.
The project entails comprehensive renovations, including replacing doors and windows, enhancing heating and ventilation systems, and installing cutting-edge artifact preservation technologies. A new geothermal energy system will also be integrated to improve sustainability and operational efficiency.
To accommodate these upgrades, the museum will temporarily close to the public starting Sunday, December 8, 2024. The closure is expected to last approximately 14 months. During this period, museum artifacts and archives will be carefully relocated to secure off-site storage to ensure their protection.
Despite the interior restoration, the museum’s theater will remain available on a limited basis for scheduled programming. Visitors will also continue to have access to the museum grounds, which will host outdoor activities, school programs, and community events, including the popular Boalsburg Farmers Market.
This project reflects PHMC’s commitment to preserving Pennsylvania’s military history while providing enhanced educational and cultural opportunities for future generations.
