HARRISBURG, PA — Members of the Shapiro Administration gathered this past week to commemorate the 35th Annual Holiday Wish Program, an employee-driven initiative that provides gifts to families and seniors in need across Pennsylvania. Since its inception in 1989, the program has grown from a small effort by a handful of Commonwealth employees into a statewide endeavor involving hundreds of participants from various state agencies.
This year, the program will deliver gifts to more than 600 individuals, including over 130 families and 60 seniors. Families in need are identified through local Department of Human Services (DHS) County Assistance Offices when applying for programs such as SNAP and LIHEAP. Participants share a wish list of items they need or want, which are fulfilled through donations and sponsorships by Commonwealth employees, private organizations, and community members.
“Every person deserves to have a joyous holiday season, but we know that not every family has the means to make that happen in the way that they would like,” said DHS Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh. “The Holiday Wish program creates an easy way to give a little extra help to our neighbors who may be struggling to make ends meet during the holidays.”
The program’s reach is ensured by a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including DHS, the Governor’s Office, and departments such as Aging, Corrections, Transportation, and more. The Pennsylvania National Guard also plays a critical role in distributing the gifts.
Among the donated items are over 700 stuffed toys, inspected for safety by the Department of Labor & Industry staff. Each December, representatives from Commonwealth agencies join forces to ensure these contributions bring joy to individuals and their families.
Dr. Arkoosh encouraged statewide volunteerism during the season, adding, “I want to thank the hundreds of employees from agencies across the Commonwealth who voluntarily contribute to ensure that these families have what they need to make the holiday season brighter.”
The Holiday Wish Program continues to embody the spirit of giving and community, delivering hope and happiness to Pennsylvanians during the holiday season.
