HARRISBURG, PA — The Route 82 bridge over Doe Run in West Marlborough Township has been closed indefinitely due to significant structural deterioration, prompting swift action to address its replacement. The unexpected closure in November, following a routine inspection, has caused notable disruptions for commuters, first responders, and local businesses.

The damaged bridge, originally built in 1932, served as a critical link for approximately 4,881 vehicles daily, accommodating oversized agricultural equipment and connecting key routes between Coatesville and Delaware. Its closure has resulted in an eight-mile detour via Route 841 (Chatham Road) and Route 842 (Clonmell Upland Road). However, concerns have arisen over GPS navigation directing motorists onto narrow, unmarked local roads, further compromising safety.

State Rep. Christina Sappey emphasized the bridge’s importance to the region. “The Doe Run Road Bridge is vital for agricultural operations, emergency response, and daily travel,” she stated, highlighting the potential safety risks and logistical challenges caused by the closure.

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission has allocated $1.2 million for the bridge’s replacement under their Transportation Improvement Program. PennDOT plans to advertise the replacement project in January 2025 to expedite its reconstruction and mitigate ongoing disruptions.

Local leaders, including Chester County Commissioner Josh Maxwell, commended the coordinated efforts to secure funding and accelerate progress. Once replaced, the new bridge will aim to restore safe and reliable connectivity for area residents and commuters.
