Is Your Neighborhood Safe? Police Investigate Armed Robberies in Southwest Philly

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Authorities are currently investigating a series of alleged commercial robberies that occurred in the Southwest Division of Philadelphia. Each incident involves reports of an armed individual demanding money from store employees. Police believe the three incidents may be connected based on similarities in the suspect’s description.

Alleged Robbery at Haverford Mini Market

The first reported robbery took place on October 7, 2024, at the Haverford Mini Market, located at 5450 Haverford Avenue. Employees told police that around 1:30 p.m., a man entered the store and demanded cash while allegedly pointing a handgun at a female employee.

Video footage reportedly shows the suspect pacing outside the store before entering and remaining inside for several minutes before the incident. Approximately $300 was taken, and the individual fled north on 55th Street. No injuries were reported.

Chester Avenue Store Targeted

A second robbery occurred on October 8, 2024, just before 1 p.m., at a store on the 4800 block of Chester Avenue. According to the complainant, a man walked through the store before allegedly pulling out a firearm and demanding money from the register.

The suspect obtained an undisclosed amount of cash and exited the location. Police noted that the suspect’s description matches the individual seen in the first incident.

Attempted Robbery at Vine Deli

The third reported incident happened on October 9, 2024, at the Vine Deli and Grocery located on North Simpson Street. Authorities say the suspect initially acted as a customer, purchasing cigars, before allegedly pulling out a handgun and demanding money.

The situation escalated when the cashier reportedly wrestled the firearm away, with help from another employee. The suspect then fled the scene on foot, heading toward 65th Street. Police recovered a black BB gun they believe was used in the incident.

Suspect Description

The suspect in all three alleged robberies is described as a Black male, approximately 6’3” in height, with a slender build, gray hair, a gray beard, and reported to be armed. The individual is estimated to be between 60 and 65 years of age.

Police Urge Caution and Request Tips

Officials have advised the public not to approach the suspect if seen and to immediately contact 911. Anyone with information on these incidents is encouraged to call the Southwest Detective Division at 215-686-3183 or submit tips anonymously via 215.686.TIPS (8477).

Authorities stress that these allegations are part of an ongoing investigation and the information provided does not imply guilt. Individuals charged with crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
