MIDDLETOWN TWP, PA — Efforts to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance road safety in Middletown Township are advancing as construction continues on a $10.6 million project to improve Langhorne-Yardley Road at the intersections of Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road. Initiated by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the project is expected to bring significant changes for both motorists and pedestrians upon its completion.
To facilitate these upgrades, PennDOT has announced travel restrictions scheduled to last from Monday, December 2, through early March 2025. Between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM on weekdays, motorists should expect delays at the following locations:
- Woodbourne Road between Kilburn Road and the Core Creek Park driveway entrance, where culvert work is being performed.
- Langhorne-Yardley Road between Bridgetown Pike and Briggs Road, where storm drainage improvements and paving operations are taking place.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work zones, as delays and backups are anticipated. All construction activities remain contingent on weather conditions and may be adjusted accordingly.
Key Infrastructure Enhancements
Under the current project, PennDOT’s contractor will execute a range of improvements, including the construction of a single-lane roundabout at the existing signalized T-intersection of Langhorne-Yardley Road and Bridgetown Pike. By reducing vehicle speeds and easing traffic flow, the planned roundabout aims to improve safety for all road users. A detour route will be established to accommodate traffic during this phase of construction.
Additionally, the Langhorne-Yardley Road and Woodbourne Road intersection will be reconfigured to include auxiliary turn lanes on all four approaches. Realignment of the northern leg of Woodbourne Road and widening of the eastern leg at Langhorne-Yardley Road will provide a dedicated left-turn lane approaching Erica Drive. These changes are expected to enhance mobility and safety at what is currently a high-traffic intersection.
Other upgrades include modified lane widths, improved sight distance, and widened shoulders on Langhorne-Yardley Road between Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road.
Advancing Pedestrian and Cyclist Accessibility
The project incorporates numerous enhancements for pedestrians and bicyclists, marking a step forward in multimodal road infrastructure. Improvements include the following:
- Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs): To be installed at key pedestrian crossings on Langhorne-Yardley Road east of the Briggs Road intersection and on Woodbourne Road near Core Creek Park and Maple Point Middle School.
- Expanded Pathways and Sidewalks: New paved paths will connect intersections to Core Creek Park, while sidewalks will be added along Langhorne-Yardley Road’s southern side between Woodbourne Road and Briggs Road.
- Paved Shoulders: Five-foot-wide paved shoulders will support bicycle traffic along the project area.
- Pedestrian-Friendly Roundabout Features: Accommodations tailored for pedestrians will be integrated into both the roundabout and the redesigned signalized intersection.
Project Timeline and Funding
James D. Morrissey, Inc., based in Philadelphia, is serving as the general contractor for the initiative, which is being financed through a combination of federal (80%) and state (20%) funds.
