WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced continued nighttime construction next week on Interstate 476 and the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) as part of an extensive $63.7 million infrastructure improvement project. Crews will be making significant upgrades to nearly 17 miles of I-476 and its connected ramps and bridges, spanning from I-76 in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.
Nightly lane closures will be in effect from Monday, December 2, through Thursday, December 5. Between the hours of 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM, northbound and southbound lane closures will occur along I-476 in sections between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges for bridge repair as well as guiderail, pipe, and inlet replacement. Concurrently, lane closures will impact the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-76 between Matsonford Road and I-476 for bridge repairs.
PennDOT has advised motorists traveling in these areas to plan ahead and expect delays during overnight hours. Drivers should consider additional travel time as backups are likely within the work zones. All scheduled construction activities remain dependent on weather conditions.
This large-scale infrastructure project aims to enhance ride quality, extend the lifespan of I-476, and upgrade associated roadside elements currently in need of repair. PennDOT’s contractor, H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, Pennsylvania, is tasked with milling and overlaying travel lanes and shoulders in both directions. The project includes repairs to 49 structures, improvements to 21 stormwater management basins, stabilization of rock slopes, sound wall restoration, and the replacement of inlets in various key locations. The initiative also incorporates the installation of new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderails.
The improvements are designed to enhance safety and optimize driving conditions for motorists along the heavily trafficked I-476 corridor. By addressing drainage, slope stability, and degraded roadside systems, PennDOT aims to create a more secure and efficient commuting experience for the public.
With an anticipated completion date set for late 2025, the project reflects significant federal investment in Pennsylvania’s infrastructure. H&K Group’s work aligns with PennDOT’s broader mission to maintain and modernize the state’s critical transportation network.
