WILMINGTON, DE — Michael Hughes, a 51-year-old resident of Townsend, Delaware, has been arrested following allegations of felony thefts at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington. The Delaware State Police announced Hughes’ arrest, which is connected to a series of thefts reported to have occurred over a three-month period.

The investigation was initiated by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Property Crimes Unit on November 12, 2024, addressing multiple thefts from the facility located at 200 Powder Mill Road. The stolen items, which included lab and office equipment valued in the thousands, were reportedly being sold online. Through detailed investigative efforts, Hughes was identified as the suspect. He was employed as a subcontractor at the facility during the period of the thefts, which spanned from August to October 2024.

Detectives executed a search warrant at Hughes’ residence, resulting in the recovery of lab and office equipment valued at several hundred thousand dollars. Following this development, a warrant for Hughes’ arrest was issued. On November 19, 2024, Hughes voluntarily surrendered to authorities at Troop 2.

Hughes faces charges including felony theft of property valued at $1,500 or greater and selling stolen property with values exceeding $1,500, compounded by two or more prior convictions. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and was subsequently released on his own recognizance.

It is important to stress that these charges are allegations and do not equate to guilt. Michael Hughes, as with all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
