HARRISBURG, PA — Point Park University emerged victorious in the sixth annual 2024 Direct Effect™ Innovation Challenge (DEIC), a prestigious competition that brings together students from postsecondary institutions across Pennsylvania to devise innovative marketing campaigns tackling real-world challenges. This year’s challenge centered on the theme “Powering the Future,” tasking participants with promoting the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s solar energy initiatives, an integral part of its ambitious goal to establish America’s First Sustainable Superhighway by 2040.
Competing against formidable peers from four other institutions—Rosemont College, Westmoreland County Community College, Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, and Penn State Altoona—Point Park University impressed a panel of industry professionals to clinch the top spot. The competition unfolded over three rigorous rounds, culminating in a final showdown at the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex.
Cassandra Coleman, Executive Director of America250PA, expressed her admiration for the students’ ingenuity and foresight. “Watching bright young Pennsylvanians participate in the Direct Effect™ Innovation Challenge each year is beyond inspiring,” Coleman remarked. She emphasized the critical role that these emerging leaders play in shaping the future, particularly as the state approaches its 250th anniversary. “All of the student teams presented EPIC ideas, and we can’t wait to see where their ideas lead,” she added.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission played a pivotal role as the presenting sponsor, with CEO Mark Compton highlighting the value of engaging youth in innovative endeavors. “Building a learning culture that delivers on innovation and modernization starts with hearing new ideas and this year’s competition did just that. We are proud to support our youth through opportunities that engage them in real-world challenges,” Compton stated.
Further support came from UGI Utilities, Inc., with Donald Brominski, Director of Business Development, underscoring the importance of fostering connections between Pennsylvania students and local businesses. “The DEIC provides an opportunity for PA students to get creative and showcase some of the amazing things happening in our Commonwealth, while also having a hand in shaping the future,” Brominski noted. He emphasized UGI’s commitment to strengthening communities, which are vital to Pennsylvania’s future success.
Endorsed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges, and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, the DEIC continues to thrive, with plans to host the competition annually leading up to 2026. As Point Park University celebrates its win, the initiative stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in driving sustainable practices and fostering economic and environmental resilience.
