NORTH EAST, MD — In an inspiring tale of resilience and determination, James Brindley has successfully navigated the complexities of academic life as a non-traditional student, emerging as a graduate of the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Cecil College. This achievement marks a significant milestone in his journey, which began amidst the dual responsibilities of family and career.
At the age of 29, Mr. Brindley faced a pivotal decision: to pursue further education without accumulating the burdensome debt often associated with lengthy collegiate programs. His choice of the PTA program was driven by the prospect of a gratifying career with a relatively short educational commitment. “At 29, I couldn’t see myself going to school for six years and accumulating a huge debt. The PTA program offered a great salary and only took a couple of years to complete,” Mr. Brindley explained.
His career transformation began in 2019, during his tenure as an automotive service advisor in North East, Maryland. The catalyst for change arrived unexpectedly when his wife secured a lucrative traveling nursing position. This opportunity not only expanded their horizons but also allowed Mr. Brindley to explore new educational avenues remotely, all while managing familial responsibilities. “We had our house here and planned to return,” he reflected on their strategic move, emphasizing the importance of seizing opportunities for the family’s future.
Mr. Brindley’s interest in physical therapy was sparked by personal experiences with the discipline, having undergone treatment for a broken arm in 2009 and a torn ACL later. These encounters ignited a passion that seamlessly blended his interests in science and sports. “I always found physical therapy very interesting. I am good at science, and I love sports. It felt like the perfect blend of my interests,” he shared.
The journey through the PTA program presented its own set of challenges, particularly in balancing academic pursuits with family life. Mr. Brindley attributes his success to meticulous time management and unwavering support from his wife and family network. “There weren’t many hours in the day, so it was tough. My wife was incredible, ensuring I had time to study and even serving as a patient for my practice techniques,” he acknowledged.
Throughout his academic journey, Mr. Brindley also found camaraderie among his peers in the PTA program, which boasts a stellar record of a 100 percent first-time pass rate on the national licensing exam for most years in the past decade. “It wasn’t easy, but we (his classmates) supported one another,” Mr. Brindley recalled, highlighting the collaborative environment that bolstered his resolve.
Financially, his educational pursuits were supported by the McCormick Memorial Scholarship, a testament to the generosity of the Cecil College Foundation. This scholarship played a pivotal role in alleviating the financial burden associated with his studies. “This scholarship alleviated some of the financial burden that school can carry,” he expressed gratefully. Mr. Brindley extended his appreciation to the contributors of the scholarship fund and expressed his commitment to giving back to the community through his newfound profession.
