WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a landmark investment aimed at revitalizing rail infrastructure, Southeastern Pennsylvania is set to benefit from $407,884,020 in federal funding secured through the Federal Railroad Administration’s Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Grants program. Enabled by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, this substantial funding aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of both Amtrak and SEPTA services, promising improved rail experiences for generations.
The funding will address critical infrastructure needs, with Amtrak receiving $397,251,476 to upgrade an 18-mile stretch of the Keystone Corridor between Philadelphia and Paoli. Key improvements include the replacement of the Bryn Mawr substation, alongside the construction of new electrical poles, catenary structures, and transmission lines. An additional $7,432,544 is allocated for the installation of a new interlocking in Exton to enhance operational efficiency by allowing trains to pass each other safely, thus expanding railway capacity.
SEPTA is designated $3,200,000 to initiate the “SEPTA Reimagining Regional Rail Master Plan.” This study aims to increase capacity and reduce train interference along the Northeast Corridor from Trenton, NJ, to Newark, DE, laying the groundwork for a more robust public transportation system.
