PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a significant enforcement action at Philadelphia International Airport, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers intercepted over $80,000 worth of undeclared merchandise from a U.S. citizen returning from Spain. The traveler, a member of the Global Entry program, attempted to underreport his purchases, claiming a total of only $700 during his arrival inspection on Halloween.

CBP officers, however, uncovered a considerably larger haul during a secondary inspection, revealing luxury items and receipts totaling $80,932. The undeclared goods included a prestigious Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore watch, high-end handbags from Gucci, Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent, a stylish Dan John bomber jacket, and two pairs of Golden Goose Ball Star sneakers.

This incident underscores the obligations of travelers, particularly those in CBP’s Global Entry program, to accurately declare goods acquired abroad. Global Entry is designed to expedite the customs process for thoroughly vetted individuals, who are expected to adhere strictly to U.S. laws and regulations. Violations such as this result in severe consequences, including the revocation of trusted traveler status.

Cleatus Hunt, CBP’s Area Port Director for the Area Port of Philadelphia, emphasized the significance of compliance, stating, “Customs and Border Protection’s trusted traveler programs are essential in helping us to secure our nation’s borders by allowing us to focus more on higher-risk travelers and cargo. When we encounter a trusted traveler deliberately violating our nation’s laws, we take swift and decisive action to revoke that member’s privilege.”

Travelers are permitted a duty exemption on merchandise up to $800, with duty payable on amounts exceeding this threshold. In this instance, the traveler faced the option of paying the required duty and a substantial penalty or forfeiting the goods. The action taken by CBP highlights the critical role the agency plays in enforcing customs regulations and safeguarding national security.

This case serves as a pertinent reminder of the importance of transparency and honesty in customs declarations, reinforcing the responsibilities inherent in Global Entry membership and the broader public.
