WEST CHESTER, PA — In celebration of International Education Week from November 18 to 22, West Chester University‘s Global Engagement Office has organized a series of events that emphasize the importance of cultural diversity and global education. Supported by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, this initiative highlights the crucial role international education plays in fostering cultural understanding and preparing individuals for a global society. These events are free and open to the public, fostering community involvement in cultural exchange.

The week begins with the Country Expo on Monday, November 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sykes Student Union Ballrooms. This engaging event will feature international students presenting the distinctive traditions and cultures of their home countries. Visitors will also have the chance to interact with study abroad alumni who will discuss their experiences overseas. Additionally, campus partners will offer insights into scholarship opportunities and strategies for enhancing resumes with international experiences.

A key highlight of the week is an artist-curated prints exhibition and talk by Mexican artist and academic Luis Verdejo, scheduled for Wednesday, November 20, at 2 p.m. in the E.O. Bull Center. Verdejo will showcase his monotype prints and elaborate on his creative techniques and inspirations. The event is hosted by Dr. Daniela Johannes from the Department of Languages and Cultures and David Jones from Art + Design.

On Thursday, November 21, the cultural celebration continues with a bilingual poetry reading and workshop by Mexican scholar and poet Tania Favela, at 3 p.m. in Mitchell Hall 102. Favela, along with Luis Verdejo, will guide participants in crafting their own poems, blending poetry and visual art. Dr. Daniela Johannes and Nancy Pearson from the English Department will moderate this session.

Simultaneously, attendees can experience “Through Our Eyes: A Journey in Greece,” a documentary-style film created by students who studied abroad in Greece. This screening will take place at 3 p.m. in the Global Engagement Center Multipurpose Room, Mitchell Hall, 4th floor, providing a student’s perspective on Greece’s rich history and culture.

For those interested in publishing academic works, Dr. Victoria Tischio will lead a virtual session titled “Publishing with Students after Studying Abroad” on Thursday, November 21, at 10 a.m. via Zoom (Meeting ID: 813 721 5539 | Passcode: 376415). Drawing from her experience of publishing a book with students, Dr. Tischio will facilitate a workshop exploring strategies for turning study abroad experiences into published projects.

Throughout the week, the Francis Harvey Green Library will host “Tea and Tales from Around the World” each day from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the second floor, featuring international tea selections and stories from diverse cultures. Additionally, on Tuesday, November 19, from 2 to 4 p.m., the library will present a “human library” event in Room 252, where participants can engage in meaningful conversations with individuals serving as “human books,” promoting dialogue on challenging topics to bridge cultural gaps and challenge stereotypes.

These events reflect West Chester University’s dedication to advancing international education, preparing students for a global environment, and attracting future leaders from around the world to participate in a rich cultural exchange.
