NORTH EAST, MD — The Harrisburg University of Science and Technology has entered into an articulation agreement with Cecil College. This collaboration creates a streamlined pathway for students in the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Cecil College to advance into Harrisburg University’s Exercise Science bachelor’s program, with a future opportunity to join the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program currently under development at HU.
In a statement reflecting the initiative’s transformative potential, Dr. Lori Portzer, Program Lead and Associate Professor for Exercise Science at HU, said, “Through the EXSC PTA pathway partnership between HU and Cecil College, we are creating a transformative opportunity for students by bridging academic excellence with practical application.” This agreement is poised to strengthen the educational infrastructure for healthcare professionals, particularly in the Tri-State area, by equipping students with essential skills to innovate and lead within the sector.
The articulation agreement is a response to the acute shortage of healthcare professionals in Pennsylvania, a situation exacerbated by an aging workforce and an inadequate training infrastructure. These challenges have been particularly pronounced in rural areas, including Central Pennsylvania. The collaboration between Harrisburg University and Cecil College aims to alleviate these issues by providing a clear, cost-effective educational pathway for aspiring physical therapists.
Jacqueline Klaczak Kopack, PT, DPT, of Harrisburg University, emphasized the importance of accessible education in this field, stating, “As a physical therapist, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of educational debt on many Doctor of Physical Therapy graduates. My background as a Director in PTA education has shown me the importance of creating more affordable and achievable DPT educational pathways.” This partnership is set to offer PTA graduates a financially viable route to advance their careers.
The agreement provides several key benefits for students. It guarantees admission to Harrisburg University’s Exercise Science program for Cecil College PTA students and alumni, provided they meet specific criteria, such as completing the “Dual Admissions Intent” form and satisfying HU’s standard admission requirements. Moreover, a block of 53 transfer credits will be awarded to PTA graduates, with additional credits for completing certain coursework, ensuring a seamless transition to further education.
Dr. Mary Way Bolt, President of Cecil College, highlighted the agreement’s significance, stating, “This dual-admissions transfer agreement between Cecil College and Harrisburg University marks a significant step forward in creating accessible, high-quality educational pathways for our students.” She emphasized that the partnership opens new academic and career opportunities for PTA students, facilitating their progression to a four-year degree and beyond.
Effective immediately, this agreement is valid through December 2028, and it is expected to play a pivotal role in bolstering the healthcare workforce in Pennsylvania and beyond. By aligning educational pathways with the needs of the healthcare sector, this partnership not only addresses current shortages but also lays the groundwork for a robust, sustainable future for healthcare professionals.
