PHILADELPHIA, PA — As the nation gears up for the 250th anniversary of its founding, Philadelphia and Camden are set to host a historic celebration honoring the Navy and Marine Corps’ 250th anniversaries in 2025. The Homecoming 250 Navy Marine Corps™ event will serve as a prelude to the semiquincentennial commemorations, celebrating the rich military history and contributions of these two esteemed branches.
George Leone, President of Homecoming 250, emphasized the deep historical roots of both the Navy and Marine Corps in Philadelphia, stating, “The Navy and Marine Corps were both founded in Philadelphia. Both Philly and Camden were instrumental in building and deploying ships in the Revolutionary War and over the next 200 years. Homecoming 250 wants to honor that history, support those who serve, salute our Veterans, and remind us of what unites us.”
The celebrations, set to take place from October 9 to October 16, 2025, will feature a diverse array of events along the Delaware River, engaging Veterans, tourists, educators, and history enthusiasts. The festivities will begin with a grand parade of ships, followed by an official blessing of the Fleet. Viewing parties will be hosted at iconic sites such as the Navy Yard and Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, and Fort Mercer and the Camden Riverfront in New Jersey.
Throughout the week, attendees can explore exhibitions highlighting the achievements of the Navy and Marine Corps at prominent museums including the Independence Seaport Museum and the Battleship New Jersey Museum. Academic symposiums, ship tours, equipment demonstrations, and flyovers, including a performance by the Blue Angels, will offer educational and entertainment opportunities for visitors of all ages.
A unique Homecoming 250 All-Veterans Reunion Picnic will take place on Independence Mall, providing Veterans with an opportunity to connect and access resources from various service organizations. Philadelphia’s Independence Mall will also host screenings and concerts, including a special showing of Ken Burns’ “The American Revolution” and performances by bands from the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
In addition to cultural and educational events, the celebration will feature athletic activities such as a 250th Anniversary run with Marines and Sailors, and the Navy SEAL Family Foundation’s Around the World Paddle Classic. The festivities will conclude with closing ceremonies and ship departures on October 16.
November 10, 2025, will mark the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary with the centennial Marine Corps Birthday Ball at the historic Bellevue Hotel, paying homage to the first ball hosted by Lieutenant General John Lejeune in 1925.
Visitors to Philadelphia during this time will have the chance to explore historic sites linked to the Navy and Marine Corps, including Independence Hall, Congress Hall, and the forthcoming recreation of Tun Tavern. These sites offer a window into the city’s pivotal role in America’s military past.
