DOWNINGTOWN, PA — The Downingtown Area School District (DASD) recently commemorated the success of its 3rd Annual Summer Sendoff 5K/1-Mile event, a notable occasion that underscores the district’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. Held in August, the event was organized by the Summer Sendoff Student Committee, comprising dedicated athletes from Downingtown High School East‘s (DHSE) Cross Country and Track and Field teams.

This year’s event was instrumental in raising over $2,000 to support Best Buddies Pennsylvania and the local Best Buddies chapter at DHSE. Best Buddies is a renowned nonprofit organization focused on fostering opportunities for friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The official presentation of the raised funds was conducted on November 11, 2024, during the DHSE Best Buddies Mixer event.

Reflecting on the accomplishments of the initiative, DHSE junior and committee member Jude Stulak remarked, “It is rewarding to see how our Summer Sendoff event has grown in three years. We have been able to donate over $4,000 to non-profit organizations, which is a testament to how a group of dedicated student athletes can make a big impact in our school and community.”

The event serves as more than just a fundraiser; it acts as a vital platform to enhance awareness about the significance of inclusivity and the positive influence of peer relationships among students of varying abilities. DHSE senior and committee member Melanie Liu highlighted this aspect by sharing, “The most rewarding part of being involved in Summer Sendoff was seeing the friendships created there and knowing I was able to give back to some of the most deserving people.”

Justin Brown, DASD’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), echoed the sentiment of the event’s significance, stating, “This event demonstrates the incredible spirit of our students and their commitment to inclusivity. The funds raised will help expand the reach of Best Buddies, ensuring that every student feels seen, valued, and supported. It’s heartwarming to see the impact that comes from students working together for a cause they believe in.”

Allison Terry, a senior student-athlete, voiced her aspirations for the future of the initiative: “I hope that this donation made a lifelong bridge between the Cross Country and Track and Field athletes and the Best Buddies program. Seeing how happy we made so many is the greatest encouragement to ask for.”

The Summer Sendoff stands as a testament to the power of community spirit and the positive changes that can be achieved when students unite for a noble cause. Through their efforts, the students of Downingtown Area School District continue to pave the way for a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
