Prepare for Nighttime Delays: Your Guide to Navigating I-76 Repairs in Philadelphia

Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA —The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a series of nighttime paving and repair operations on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway). This initiative is part of a significant $37.9 million project aimed at resurfacing and repairing nearly five miles of the interstate, including its on-and-off ramps and over 20 bridges.

Beginning on Monday, November 11, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, the ramp from Girard Avenue to eastbound I-76 will be closed for paving operations. During this time, motorists are advised to follow the designated detour routes to ensure safety and minimize disruption. Concurrently, from Monday through Thursday, both directions of I-76 between the U.S. 1 and 30th Street Station interchanges will experience lane closures for paving and bridge deck repairs.

On Tuesday, November 12, similar closures will affect the ramp from eastbound I-76 to Girard Avenue, requiring drivers to adhere to detour routes as directed. Additionally, on Friday, November 15, the ramp from westbound I-76 to University Avenue will be closed overnight for paving, with detours clearly marked for motorists.

These operations are designed to enhance the roadway’s infrastructure, ensuring a smoother and safer driving experience for all users. While these activities are essential, they are also dependent on favorable weather conditions, and motorists should remain informed about potential changes to the schedule.

As traffic backups and delays are anticipated due to these closures, PennDOT strongly advises drivers to allocate extra travel time when navigating these areas. For real-time updates on traffic conditions, motorists are encouraged to consult resources such as the MyChesCo Traffic Center.
