Arrests Bring Closure: Suspects in Fatal Wilmington Shooting Apprehended

WILMINGTON, DEWilmington Police have announced the arrest of two individuals in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on June 27, resulting in a fatality. The incident took place at approximately 11:05 p.m. in the 300 block of East 23rd Street, where officers found a 57-year-old female victim suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim, identified as Michelle Clifton, was transported to a hospital in critical condition but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries last week.

The investigation, led by Detective Jessica Gledhill of the Criminal Investigations Division, identified 26-year-old Gyheim Fitzgerald and 22-year-old Ke’shawn Fortune as suspects in the case. Arrest warrants were issued for both men on October 29. Fitzgerald was apprehended without incident the following day by the Uniformed Services Division, while Fortune was taken into custody on November 1 by the New Castle County Police Department.

Both individuals face several serious allegations. Fitzgerald has been charged with attempted murder in the first degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, two counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, first-degree conspiracy, and three counts of criminal mischief. He was arraigned and held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a cash-only bail of $568,796.

Similarly, Fortune faces charges of attempted murder in the first degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, two counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, first-degree conspiracy, and three counts of criminal mischief. His bail was set at $1,135,500 cash-only following arraignment.

In light of the victim’s passing, authorities are collaborating with the Delaware Department of Justice to consider upgrading the charges against both men. It is crucial to note that all allegations are considered accusations, and both suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
