A cutting-edge technological initiative by Chester Water Authority (CWA) is transforming Octoraro Reservoir’s ecosystem, yielding remarkable improvements in fish quality and overall water health. Through the strategic deployment of aeration devices and sonic buoys, the reservoir has become a thriving habitat for aquatic life dramatically improving water quality and creating a top destination for local anglers.
At the heart of this transformation is a sophisticated aeration system covering 25-30 acres of the lake’s main stem. Utilizing fine bubble diffusers, the system creates a natural mixing process that circulates water between the surface and depths, significantly boosting dissolved oxygen levels crucial for aquatic life. This chemical-free approach has revolutionized the lake’s ecosystem, creating optimal conditions for aquatic life to flourish.
“We’re seeing remarkable improvements in fish habitat,” explains the CWA Director of Plant Operations Stephen McBryde. “Enhanced oxygen levels have created an optimal environment for fish and other aquatic species. Additionally, we’ve seen a marked reduction in algae blooms, resulting in clearer, healthier water. This aligns perfectly with our dual mission as both water provider and environmental steward.”
The aeration system works in tandem with newly installed sonic buoys, which emit ultrasonic frequencies to control algae growth without harming fish or wildlife. Jim Neary of Jim Neary’s Bait and Tackle has witnessed the transformation firsthand. “The results are impossible to ignore,” he reports. “Our anglers are pulling in fish that are bigger and healthier than we’ve ever seen.
