I-76 Eastbound Closure Alert: Critical Repairs Rescheduled in Philly!

Interstate 76

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a change in schedule for the planned closure of eastbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in the Grays Ferry section of Philadelphia. Originally set for this weekend, the closure is now rescheduled to accommodate events at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.

The critical maintenance work, involving bridge deck repairs on two structures, will now take place from 9:00 PM on Friday, October 11, to 6:00 AM on Sunday, October 13, weather permitting. During this period, eastbound I-76 will be closed from just after the ramp to Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue (Exit 346B) to just before the 34th Street on-ramp.

Motorists are advised to use regional detour routes via I-676 East (Vine Street Expressway) to I-95 South, or I-476 South to I-95 North. Local traffic will be redirected at Grays Ferry Avenue/University Avenue (Exit 346B) and can access the I-76 East via the University Avenue Bridge/34th Street route. Despite the closure, all ramps to and from I-76 East will remain open, ensuring some level of connectivity.

The postponement of this closure considers the dynamic urban environment of Philadelphia, as it coincides with significant gatherings, thereby minimizing disruption. The rescheduled maintenance is vital for enhancing the structural integrity of these bridge decks, which is paramount for commuter safety and efficient traffic flow.

As electronic message boards will notify motorists about the closure and alternate routes, commuters should anticipate potential delays and plan accordingly. The coordination of this endeavor involves the City of Philadelphia, the Sports Complex, SEPTA, and other regional transportation entities, highlighting the collaborative approach towards minimizing traffic disruptions.
