PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a series of nighttime construction activities slated to commence next week on Interstate 76, also known as the Schuylkill Expressway, in Philadelphia. This initiative, part of a comprehensive $36.8 million project, aims to resurface and repair approximately five miles of the interstate, alongside its associated on-and-off ramps and more than 20 bridges.
Commencing Monday, September 30, through Tuesday, October 1, from 9:00 PM until 5:00 AM, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 to westbound I-76 will be temporarily closed to facilitate paving operations. Motorists will be redirected via eastbound I-76, advising them to exit at Montgomery Drive to regain access to westbound I-76. Concurrently, the initial ramp from westbound I-76 to U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) will also be affected. Drivers are advised to proceed to the second exit for U.S. 1 (City Avenue).
In addition, from Monday, September 30, through Thursday, October 3, the same nightly schedule will see a lane closure implemented on sections of both eastbound and westbound I-76 between the Girard Avenue and 30th Street Station interchanges for concrete roadway restoration. Furthermore, from Monday, September 30, until Friday, October 4, paving operations will necessitate the closure of the ramp from westbound I-76 to Lincoln Drive. Motorists should continue on westbound I-76, exit at Belmont Avenue, and utilize the ramp to eastbound I-76 to access Lincoln Drive.
During the same period, a lane closure will affect segments of eastbound and westbound I-76 between the Montgomery Drive and U.S. 1 South interchanges during the prescribed nighttime hours. PennDOT urges motorists to allocate additional travel time due to anticipated traffic backups and delays, noting that the schedule is contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
This extensive project involves milling and overlaying the pavement, repairing concrete bases, shoulders, and barriers, adjusting grades for existing inlets, replacing damaged signs, and installing new pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips. It also encompasses necessary bridge repairs, all designed to enhance the infrastructure and ensure safer travel conditions.
