How Will PennDOT’s I-76 Repairs Impact Your Evening Commute? Find Out Here

Interstate 76

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is set to commence extensive paving, roadway repair, and guiderail installation operations on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia next week. This initiative is part of a $36.8 million project aimed at resurfacing and repairing nearly five miles of the expressway, including its ramps and over 20 bridges.

Commencing on Monday, September 23, through Tuesday, September 24, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, the ramps connecting Montgomery Drive to westbound I-76 will be closed for paving. Motorists will be redirected through Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Sweet Briar Drive, Lansdowne Drive, and Girard Avenue to access the expressway. Drivers on I-76 West will continue to Belmont Avenue and utilize the eastbound direction to reach Montgomery Drive.

Additionally, from Monday, September 23, to Wednesday, September 25, the ramp from westbound I-76 to Lincoln Drive will be closed during the same nighttime hours, directing traffic to Belmont Avenue before returning eastbound to Lincoln Drive. Lane closures will also occur from Monday, September 23, to Friday, September 27, affecting both directions of I-76 between Montgomery Drive and U.S. 1 South, as well as between Girard Avenue and 30th Street Station, to accommodate paving and concrete repairs.

Drivers are advised to anticipate delays and allow additional travel time as significant slowdowns are expected. All operations are subject to weather conditions and may be adjusted accordingly.

This project also encompasses milling and overlaying of pavement, concrete repairs, sign replacements, and installation of new safety features such as rumble strips. For continuous updates and to better plan your commute, visit the MyChesCo Traffic Center.
