Attention East Falls and Wissahickon Residents: Nighttime Lane Closures on Henry Avenue Could Impact Your Commute!

Lane restrictions

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a series of High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) operations scheduled for Henry Avenue in Philadelphia. This initiative, targeting the East Falls and Wissahickon neighborhoods, is part of a broader project aimed at enhancing travel and safety along the vital corridor. From Monday, September 23, through Friday, October 4, motorists will face periodic alternating lane closures from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM between Walnut Lane and Midvale Avenue.

The planned improvements extend beyond simple resurfacing. PennDOT will upgrade traffic signals and redesign the highway infrastructure, addressing both mobility and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. Key intersections, including Abbotsford Avenue, Queen Lane, and Midvale Avenue, among others, will see new and upgraded traffic signals. Roadway enhancements such as milling, resurfacing, and median widening are also planned, with a focus on improving traffic flow and reducing speeding.

Furthermore, a southbound left turn lane will be introduced at Midvale Avenue, and the traffic island at Warden Drive will be expanded. Vegetative and concrete raised center medians will be added at strategic points along the route, enhancing safety and traffic management. In a push to support non-motorized traffic, a shared-use path for bicycles and pedestrians will be constructed on the east side of Henry Avenue from Schoolhouse Lane to Walnut Lane. Additional safety measures include the installation of bump-outs, sidewalks, and ADA-compliant ramps at numerous intersections.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time due to anticipated delays. As always, the schedule for these operations is weather-dependent. For ongoing updates and detailed traffic information, please visit the MyChesCo Traffic Center.
