PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a series of improvements on Henry Avenue in Philadelphia, aimed at boosting travel and safety in the East Falls and Wissahickon neighborhoods. Line striping is scheduled from Monday, September 9, through Friday, September 13, with work occurring nightly from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM. During this period, drivers can expect periodic alternating lane closures on Henry Avenue between Roberts Avenue and Hermit Street. Motorists should plan for delays as traffic backups are likely.

This initiative is part of a larger project to enhance the 1.6-mile corridor with significant upgrades. Traffic signals at key intersections, including Abbotsford Avenue and Midvale Avenue, will see improvements. The project also involves redesigning the roadway to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. New signing, pavement markings, and roadway design features will accompany milling and resurfacing efforts.

Key safety enhancements include the installation of a southbound left turn lane at Midvale Avenue and the enlargement of the traffic island at Warden Drive. Vegetative and concrete raised center medians will be added at strategic locations to further enhance safety.

To improve mobility for non-motorists, a shared-use path for bicyclists and pedestrians will be constructed along the east side of Henry Avenue from Schoolhouse Lane to Walnut Lane. Additional features include bump-outs, sidewalks, and ADA ramps at multiple intersections, enhancing accessibility and safety for all users.

All scheduled activities are weather dependent, and adjustments may occur as necessary. Drivers can check current road conditions by visiting the MyChesCo Traffic Center.
