PHILADELPHIA, PA — Wine enthusiasts are in for an extraordinary experience at the 2nd Annual Philly Black Wine Festival, scheduled for September 14th at the Penn Museum in University City. Building on the success of its sold-out debut, the festival returns with an expanded lineup, promising a vibrant blend of culture, taste, and community.
The festival, organized by Kabila Events and powered by its founder Sonia Blount, known as Sunny, aims to highlight Black and minority-owned wine businesses. “Philly Black Wine Fest is not just about celebrating our culture and community,” said Blount. “This experience prioritizes cultivating spaces that support and celebrate traditionally underrepresented industries.”
This year’s theme, Eden Noir, encourages attendees to dress fashionably in vibrant colors and prints, setting the stage for a night of elegance and excitement. The festival will feature over 20 Black and minority-owned businesses, offering wine tastings complemented by a curated selection of food and cocktails.
Participants can explore wine-tasting education sessions led by professional sommeliers, enriching their understanding of the craft behind the wines they enjoy. Live music and art exhibitions will further enhance the sensory journey, providing a rich backdrop for celebration.
Blount, who started Kabila Events in 2021, emphasizes the importance of supporting local businesses. “Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, I have always understood the importance of providing resources and economic opportunities for local businesses,” she stated. The festival shines a light on the challenges Black wine entrepreneurs face, including limited access to capital and systemic barriers, as Blount aims to host additional events to bridge these gaps.
Attendees will enjoy three hours of wine tasting, with a VIP option extending to four hours, providing ample opportunity to savor premium wines from notable Black vintners. The festival also grants access to the Penn Museum’s treasures, offering a blend of historical exploration alongside modern celebration.
Highlighted wine vendors include Yachi Blanc ’22, Amour Geneve, and Strange Fruit Wines, among others, promising a diverse selection to suit all palates. As the festival draws near, anticipation builds for this unique celebration of heritage and innovation in winemaking.
