During National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, the department aims to ensure that families across the Commonwealth are informed about these essential services.
Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys emphasized the significance of this benefit, stating, “After welcoming a child, the last thing a parent should have to worry about is figuring out how to afford essential resources that assist with breastfeeding.” The ACA mandates that health insurers provide comprehensive lactation support and counseling without cost-sharing. This means no out-of-pocket expenses such as copayments, deductibles, or coinsurance for covered services.
The support includes consultations and educational services from clinicians and peer groups. In addition, health insurers are required to cover breastfeeding equipment and supplies throughout the breastfeeding period, both before and after birth. While the specifics regarding the type and quantity of breast pumps may vary by plan, all insurers on Pennie, Pennsylvania’s health insurance marketplace, must cover the cost of a new or rented breast pump.
