PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that various construction activities will continue at night on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia. The ongoing project aims to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the interstate, including associated on-and-off ramps and more than 20 bridges.

Tonight, August 4, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, a lane closure will be in place on eastbound I-76 between the U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) and Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo interchanges for paving.

On Monday, August 5, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, a lane closure will occur on westbound I-76 between the Spring Garden Street and Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo interchanges for guiderail and attenuator replacement.

On Monday, August 5, and Tuesday, August 6, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) to westbound I-76 will be closed and detoured for paving. Motorists will be directed to use eastbound I-76 and exit at Montgomery Drive to access westbound I-76.

Also, on Monday, August 5, and Tuesday, August 6, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, the ramp from westbound I-76 to southbound U.S. 1 (City Avenue) will be closed and detoured for paving. Motorists should follow the posted detour route.

From Monday, August 5, through Friday, August 9, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, lane closures will be in place on both eastbound and westbound I-76 between the 30th Street and Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo interchanges for milling.

During the same period, a lane closure will be in place on the ramp/merge from southbound U.S. 1 to eastbound I-76 for bridge deck repairs.

On Tuesday, August 6, and Wednesday, August 7, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, the ramp from westbound I-76 to Lincoln Drive (Exit 340A) will be closed and detoured for paving. Motorists will be directed to use westbound I-76, exit at Belmont Avenue, and use eastbound I-76 to access the ramp to Lincoln Drive.

Motorists should expect significant delays and are advised to allow extra travel time. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this contract, PennDOT’s contractor will mill and overlay I-76 pavement from U.S. 1 to I-676. The project includes concrete base, shoulder, and barrier repair and replacement, minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations, replacement of damaged signs, and installation of new pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips. Bridge repairs are also part of the project.
