PHILADELPHIA, PA — United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero announced that John Nusslein, 20, of Philadelphia, has been sentenced to 300 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Nusslein was also ordered to pay restitution of $5,300 and a $300 special assessment. The sentencing was handed down by United States District Court Judge John M. Younge on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
Nusslein pleaded guilty on April 2, 2024, to charges stemming from two alleged carjackings in Northeast Philadelphia in late 2021. He faced one count of conspiracy to commit carjacking, one count of carjacking resulting in death, and one count of carjacking resulting in serious bodily injury.
The allegations detail a series of events between November 29, 2021, and December 29, 2021:
On December 2, 2021, Nusslein and two accomplices allegedly placed a fake food order to lure their victim, a delivery driver known as C.C., to the 3000 block of Teesdale Street. Upon arrival, C.C. was allegedly attacked and his vehicle, a 2004 Toyota Camry, was stolen. C.C. later succumbed to his injuries on December 21, 2021. The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the cause of death to be the assault sustained during the carjacking.
On December 16, 2021, Nusslein and another accomplice allegedly used a similar tactic to lure a second delivery driver, W.Z., to the 9000 block of Hilspach Street. W.Z. was allegedly threatened with a firearm and assaulted before his vehicle, a 2015 Infiniti QX5, was stolen.
“A man just trying to make a living lost his life, because John Nusslein allegedly wanted his car,” said U.S. Attorney Romero. “Another man was brutally assaulted for the same reason. Such senseless violence demands a strong response on behalf of the victims and the community.”
ATF Special Agent in Charge Eric DeGree added, “This case serves as a reminder that carjacking is deadly dangerous and a serious federal crime with lengthy prison sentences.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Philadelphia Police Department investigated the case. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Lauren E. Stram and Robert E. Eckert.
