NCCN Celebrates 25 Years of Advancing Cancer Research

National Comprehensive Cancer Network

PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA — The National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®) is marking the 25th anniversary of its Oncology Research Program (ORP). This initiative has been pivotal in funding and overseeing innovative cancer research and quality improvement projects.

The NCCN ORP has managed over 180 research studies and quality projects aimed at improving outcomes for cancer patients. Since its inception in 1999, the program has been a cornerstone in facilitating new insights into cancer care. The ORP’s efforts include oversight of the NCCN Foundation® Young Investigator Award, supporting 75 recipients since 2011.

“The NCCN ORP has a long history of facilitating the development of new insights into cancer care,” said Crystal S. Denlinger, MD, CEO of NCCN. Dr. Denlinger herself was an early recipient of the Young Investigator Award and has risen through the ranks to become NCCN’s CEO.

Over the past nine years, the ORP has also spearheaded the scientific poster sessions at the NCCN Annual Conference. These sessions have become a platform for emerging leaders in oncology to present their research. In 2024, the conference accepted around 200 poster submissions across various categories, including clinical research and health outcomes.

The ORP began with a simple grant model to support investigator-initiated research. Its first Request for Proposals (RFP) went out in 2002. Since then, the program has issued 45 RFPs and expanded its portfolio to include quality improvement projects. Research supported by the ORP has been conducted at nearly all of NCCN’s member institutions and has involved numerous collaborations with various funders.

Through its website, the NCCN ORP also provides resources like the Informed Consent Language Database and Best Practices for Biorepositories. These tools aim to support cancer research and improve the quality of clinical trials.
