HARRISBURG, PA — The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has appointed Benn Carlson as the new district forester for Tioga State Forest. Covering 161,890 acres in Bradford and Tioga counties, the forest is home to the majestic Pine Creek Gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, and the popular Pine Creek Rail Trail.
“We are excited Benn’s knowledge of the area and commitment to sustainable forestry leading Tioga State Forest,” said Department Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “He is a proven leader and someone who is dedicated to managing forests to protect valuable habitat and to provide opportunities to educate the public on the incredible work of district staff.”
Carlson, a native of Galeton, brings local expertise and a deep commitment to his role. “I’ve lived here and recreated in this forest my entire life, so this is a great feeling to lead the Tioga as the district manager,” Carlson said. “We have an amazing team and are doing a lot of great work. I’m very thankful for what we have in this district.”
The state forest offers breathtaking views, pristine streams like Cedar Run and Babbs Creek, and is part of the Pennsylvania Wilds and the Route 6 Heritage Corridor. Carlson’s duties will include managing timber resources, recreational lands, and community engagement.
An outdoor enthusiast, Carlson enjoys hunting, hiking, camping, skiing, and making maple syrup. He lives in Galeton with his wife Kristy, daughter Zoey, and son Daxon. He succeeds Jim Hyland, who retired in 2023.
Carlson started his career with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as a forest patrolman in Elk State Forest in 2002. He joined Tioga State Forest in 2003 as a forest technician and moved up through the ranks to assistant district forester.
Educated at Pennsylvania College of Technology, Carlson has always had a passion for the outdoors. He is keen to develop community events and connect with school-age children to promote careers in conservation.
Carlson’s appointment marks a new chapter for Tioga State Forest, emphasizing sustainable management and community involvement.
