Major Roadwork to Begin on Route 73 in Cheltenham Township

Travel Restrictions

CHELTENHAM TWP, PA — Motorists should prepare for significant traffic disruptions as construction kicks off on Route 73 (Church Road) starting Monday, August 12. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the commencement of a project aimed at improving traffic flow and safety at the intersections of Route 73, Greenwood Avenue, and Rices Mill Road in Montgomery County.

The project will see the addition of turn lanes at these busy intersections. Left turn lanes will be introduced on Route 73, while Greenwood Avenue will get a northbound right turn lane. The traffic signals at Route 73 and Greenwood Avenue, as well as Rices Mill Road, will be interconnected to streamline traffic movement. Enhancements also include improved drainage and a new stormwater management system. Additionally, a sidewalk will be extended along the north side of Route 73 from Rices Mill Road to Greenwood Avenue.

Environmental efforts related to Curtis Arboretum will involve removing and planting trees, salvaging wood for repurposing, reconstructing stone walls, and re-vegetating disturbed areas.

The construction schedule includes weekday closures and detours from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, lasting until November 12. Route 73 will be closed between Route 152 (Limekiln Pike) and Washington Lane. Motorists will need to use Route 152, Easton Road, Route 309 (Ogontz Avenue/Cheltenham Avenue), and Washington Lane as alternate routes.

Local access will remain up to the work zone, but drivers should allow extra time for travel due to anticipated backups and delays. The construction activities are weather dependent.

Allan Myers, LP of Worcester, Pennsylvania, is the general contractor for this $10.8 million project, funded entirely by federal money. Physical construction is slated for completion by fall 2027.
