DOVER, DE — The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is gearing up for its 37th annual Delaware Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 14. This event aims to keep the state’s beaches and waterways pristine, and volunteers are invited to register now to participate from 9 a.m. to noon at one of more than 45 designated cleanup sites. Registration is available online at de.gov/coastalcleanup.

A Statewide Effort for a Cleaner Delaware

The Coastal Cleanup is part of a broader, month-long campaign beginning on Sept. 1, focused on cleaning up neighborhoods, outdoor spaces, and waterways across Delaware. These efforts support Governor John Carney’s Keep DE Litter Free initiative, which aims to combat litter statewide. The event was canceled last year for the first time due to severe weather, but organizers are determined to make a strong comeback.

“This year, we are gathering volunteers and coming back stronger than ever, energizing our efforts to ensure that our beaches, waterways, natural areas, and parks are clean and litter-free,” said DNREC Secretary Shawn M. Garvin. “We encourage volunteers to sign up now at the sites of their choice for Sept. 14.”

Impact of Previous Cleanups

During the 2022 Coastal Cleanup, volunteers collected 5,500 pounds of trash from waterways, wetlands, and other natural areas. The most common items were cigarette butts, beverage bottles and cans, food containers, plastic bags, and balloons.

How to Get Involved

Delawareans and visitors are encouraged to make a difference by cleaning up trash in their local areas throughout the year, not just in September. Here are some suggested actions:

  • Regularly pick up trash near your home and surrounding areas.
  • Carry out the trash you carry in.
  • Bring disposable gloves and bags to collect trash while enjoying outdoor activities.

For the coordinated cleanup on Sept. 14, volunteers should register by Sunday, Sept. 1 on the Coastal Cleanup page at de.gov/coastalcleanup. Due to site capacity limitations, walkups are not encouraged.

Site captains will be present at each location to sign in volunteers and provide directions. Supplies such as gloves, trash bags, data cards, and pens will be available, though participants are encouraged to bring their own gloves and use digital data tools.

Year-Round Commitment

The Delaware Coastal Cleanup is more than just a one-day event; it’s a call to action for ongoing community involvement in keeping the state clean. By participating, volunteers help protect Delaware’s natural beauty and ensure that beaches and waterways remain enjoyable for everyone. Join DNREC in this vital effort to make a lasting impact on the environment.
