HARRISBURG, PA — Socialist presidential candidate Claudia De la Cruz and her running mate Karina Garcia will appear on Pennsylvania’s ballot for the upcoming November election. Representing the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the duo aims to provide an alternative to the traditional two-party system.

Challenging the Status Quo

The campaign announced that state election officials have confirmed their candidacy. Their platform seeks to challenge both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. “People deserve a choice outside of the two-party system,” De la Cruz stated. She criticized both major parties, calling them “servants of Wall Street billionaires who push war, racism, and environmental destruction.”

Grassroots Effort

Securing a spot on the ballot was no easy feat. Campaign volunteers needed to collect at least 5000 signatures from registered voters in Pennsylvania. To ensure they met this requirement, they aimed for double the amount and ultimately gathered 10,400 signatures. “This accomplishment is the result of the tireless work of hundreds of volunteers all across Pennsylvania,” said Garcia. She highlighted the grassroots nature of their campaign, noting volunteers were active in shopping centers, festivals, and transportation hubs.

An Ambitious Platform

The socialist candidates are running on an eight-point program that includes nationalizing the 100 largest corporations in America. De la Cruz specifically pointed to UPMC, one of Pennsylvania’s largest employers and healthcare providers. She criticized UPMC for underpaying employees and contributing to gentrification. “In place of the current system, which prioritizes companies like UPMC making money for shareholders, our socialist platform calls for a living wage, national healthcare, and affordable housing for all,” she explained.

Looking Ahead

De la Cruz and Garcia aim to be on the ballot in over 20 states, representing a majority of the electoral college votes. They believe their campaign resonates with voters who are dissatisfied with the current system. “In a moment when interest in third-party candidates is surging to historic highs, our campaign is emerging as a top choice for people who believe that we need a whole new system to end capitalism before it ends us,” De la Cruz said. The campaign plans to be active in Pennsylvania and continue organizing beyond election day.

Securing a spot on Pennsylvania’s ballot marks a significant milestone for the Party for Socialism and Liberation, showcasing their growing influence and commitment to grassroots political involvement in the region.
