WILMINGTON, DE — InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) announced on Friday that the UK’s Court of Appeal has ruled in its favor in a key FRAND licensing case against Lenovo. The court’s decision increases the amount Lenovo must pay for a license to InterDigital’s cellular SEP (Standard Essential Patents) patents.
The Court of Appeal dismissed Lenovo’s appeal entirely. As a result, Lenovo is required to pay for all past sales from 2007 onwards. This ruling raises Lenovo’s payment by an additional $55 million, totaling approximately $240 million for past sales through December 31, 2023.
Josh Schmidt, Chief Legal Officer at InterDigital, praised the decision. “This decision better recognizes the value of our cellular wireless innovation and gives InterDigital another court win in our licensing dispute with Lenovo,” he said. Schmidt also noted the ruling’s broader implications. “This decision takes a very important step towards achieving a balance between innovator and implementer by making it harder for implementers like Lenovo to delay taking a license to patented technologies that are the bedrock of connected devices.”
As of the beginning of this year, Lenovo remains unlicensed to InterDigital’s cellular portfolio. Schmidt emphasized that InterDigital is still committed to reaching an agreement that ensures fair compensation for its patented technologies.
This ruling marks a significant milestone in the ongoing battle over patent licensing in the tech industry, underscoring the critical role of intellectual property in the development and commercialization of connected devices.
