PHILADELPHIA, PA — Anthony Mazzccua, 25, of Upper Darby, PA, was sentenced on Monday to 12 months in prison for participating in a scheme to steal mail from U.S. Postal Service collection boxes. United States District Court Judge Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro also ordered Mazzccua to serve three years of supervised release and pay $26,654.94 in restitution.
Mazzccua and his codefendant, Hervens Toussaint, 26, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of attempted mail theft, aiding and abetting attempted mail theft, and possession of stolen mail. Toussaint received his sentence in May, which included three years of probation, a $1,000 fine, and $15,706.67 in restitution.
The pair used a USPS Arrow Key to access collection boxes in Delaware County, PA. They stole checks, altered the payee names and amounts, and deposited them into accounts held by third parties. They then tried to withdraw the fraudulently obtained funds.
On October 27, 2021, law enforcement caught Mazzccua and Toussaint with an unindicted juvenile attempting to steal mail in Aston, PA. Mazzccua possessed six stolen checks and a USPS route key tag. Authorities found additional stolen mail and checks in their car.
U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero emphasized the importance of the postal system, stating, “The defendants assaulted the integrity and reliability of that system, negatively impacting the lives of numerous victims who had their checks stolen from the mail.”
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Social Security Administration, and the Upper Chichester Township Police Department investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorney Eileen Castilla Geiger prosecuted it.
