PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that nighttime construction activities will continue next week on Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia, potentially causing significant traffic delays.
From Sunday, July 7, through Friday, July 12, lane closures will be in place on the ramp from southbound I-95 at the Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges for bridge repairs from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
Additionally, from Monday, July 8, through Wednesday, July 10, alternating lane closures will occur in both directions on I-95 between the Aramingo Avenue and I-676 interchanges from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for surveying. From Monday, July 8, through Thursday, July 11, a right lane closure will be in place on northbound I-95 between the Allegheny Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM for core borings.
For southbound I-95, there will be a single lane closure starting at 9:00 PM, followed by a double lane closure from midnight to 5:00 AM between Ashburner Street and Bleigh Avenue for diamond grinding from Monday, July 8, through Friday, July 12. On the same dates, northbound I-95 will experience similar closures between Bleigh Avenue and Ashburner Street for line striping.
Motorists should expect backups and delays in these areas and allow extra time for travel. All activities are weather-dependent.
These infrastructure improvements are part of PennDOT’s $37.4 million project to perform high-priority repairs on 27 bridges along I-95, ensuring safety and mobility on this crucial corridor.
The surveying operations are part of the design phase for the upcoming I-95/GR6 project, which will reconstruct southbound I-95 and its ramps between Race Street and Frankford Avenue. This section is scheduled for construction in late 2025.
The core borings are part of the design phase for the I-95/AF3 project, aimed at reconstructing northbound I-95 and its structures between Ann Street and Wheatsheaf Lane. Construction for this section is expected to begin in 2025.
