MALVERN, PA — Charles Colvin, a recent graduate of Great Valley High School, has been awarded the first-place Dan Collins Scholarship by NaturaLawn of America. As the top recipient, Colvin will receive a $5,000 scholarship to support his studies at Penn State University, where he plans to pursue a degree in horticulture.
Colvin’s academic journey doesn’t stop at an undergraduate degree. He intends to further his education with a PhD in plant genetics, aiming to innovate within the green industry through environmental technologies.
The Dan Collins Scholarship, established in 2017, honors the memory of Dan Collins, a former NaturaLawn franchise owner who passed away from cancer in 2005. The scholarship recognizes students who exemplify generosity and kindness, traits that Collins was known for.
This year’s competition was stiff, with applicants from over 25 states vying for the award. To qualify, students had to be high school seniors or full-time students in an Associate or Bachelor Degree program. They also needed to submit three letters of recommendation and two one-page essays—one explaining their suitability for the award and another detailing how they plan to use their education.
Additionally, Elizabeth Low from Houston, Ohio, received the second-place scholarship of $3,000. Elizabeth Buohl from Middletown, Maryland, won the third-place $2,000 award.
Phil Catron, president and founder of NaturaLawn of America, expressed his pride in the selected candidates. “We are so pleased to assist these very deserving young adults in realizing their educational goals and easing the cost of the journey ahead of them. We’re eager to follow their paths and are sure they will achieve great success in their future endeavors.”
Colvin’s success story not only highlights his personal achievements but also highlightsthe importance of supporting young talent in the green industry. As he embarks on his educational journey, his work promises to contribute significantly to advancements in horticulture and environmental technology.
