PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that construction activities will continue next week under the nearly completed project to replace the overhead ramp and structure from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia.

From Monday, June 24, through Wednesday, June 26, periodic single lane closures will occur as needed on the southbound U.S. 13/Hunting Park Avenue ramp over U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard). These closures will take place from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for joint and crack sealing operations.

Motorists should plan for traffic backups and delays when traveling through the work area. All scheduled activities depend on weather conditions.

These periodic lane closures are part of the final construction efforts to complete the $7.79 million bridge improvement project. This significant project saw the replacement of the existing single-span, steel plate girder bridge carrying the southbound U.S. 13/Hunting Park Avenue ramp over U.S. 1 with a modern single-span, prestressed, precast concrete bridge. The new structure provides additional vertical clearance.

The southbound U.S. 13/Hunting Park Avenue ramp reopened on February 15, 2024, following the completion of the main replacement work. Besides the bridge replacement, the project included constructing retaining wall extensions on the approaches, performing full-depth paving, and installing new sidewalks and ADA curb ramps. Additionally, new traffic signals, highway lighting, guiderails, and pavement markings were added.

South State, Inc., a contractor based in Bridgeton, N.J., managed this project, which is financed entirely with federal funds.

As drivers navigate through the area, they are advised to allow extra time for their travels. While the temporary inconvenience might cause frustration, these improvements are crucial for ensuring long-term safety and efficiency on one of Philadelphia’s key transportation routes.
