LANSDALE, PA – Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Executive Deputy Secretary Mike Hanna Jr. kicked off their summer with a visit this week to Merrymead Farm, one of 41 creameries featured on “Scooped: An Ice Cream Trail.” This initiative aims to promote Pennsylvania’s dairy industry and encourage local tourism.

On the heels of Governor Josh Shapiro’s recent tour for “The Great American Getaway,” officials emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses. “No summer getaway is complete without a scoop of ice cream from a Pennsylvania creamery,” said Secretary Redding. “Knowing you’re supporting one of Pennsylvania’s more than 4,000 dairy farms just sweetens the adventure.”

Launched in 2018, Scooped: An Ice Cream Trail is a collaboration between the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and its PA Preferred® program, DCED’s Tourism Office, and the Center for Dairy Excellence. The initiative highlights the state’s creameries, offering both fun and economic benefits.

“Scooped: An Ice Cream Trail is a fun and delicious way to support Pennsylvania small businesses and our dairy industry,” said Executive Deputy Secretary Hanna. “This year’s trail will take visitors all across the Commonwealth and is a great way to spend time with friends and family this summer. The Shapiro Administration is proud to support the agriculture industry, which is one of the five key sectors included in Pennsylvania’s economic development plan to position the Commonwealth for strong economic growth and more good-paying jobs.”

Merrymead Farm, located in Lansdale, Montgomery County, exemplifies the immersive farm experience the trail promotes. Visitors can choose from over 32 ice cream flavors, enjoy bakery treats, and explore the farm’s various attractions. The farm offers a unique glimpse into dairy farming, allowing guests to view the milking parlor, meet the animals, and participate in seasonal activities like wagon rides.

Kelsey Givler, the manager of Merrymead Farm, expressed gratitude for community support. “It’s the support of a community like ours that makes a difference,” she said. “Our family and staff have created a relaxing and fun farm environment that encourages families to spend more time together and enjoy the finer things in life, like a delicious ice cream cone. We are forever grateful for our customers who support Merrymead year-round. Whether it’s getting their garden plants, fresh produce, pumpkins, or Christmas trees from us, they have supported us for 53 years and we pray for many more.”

The trail not only provides a delightful experience for visitors but also helps bolster the local economy. By attracting tourists to these creameries, the initiative boosts sales and supports the livelihoods of dairy farmers. This is particularly important as the dairy industry faces various challenges, including fluctuating milk prices and increasing production costs.

Travelers can plan their adventures and learn about participating creameries by visiting the trail’s official website. Dedicated dairy lovers have the chance to earn points and win prizes, such as a stainless-steel ice cream scooper after visiting five stops and a t-shirt after ten stops.

The Scooped initiative reflects a broader effort to integrate agricultural experiences into tourism. This approach not only educates the public about farming practices but also fosters a deeper appreciation for local agriculture. By connecting consumers directly with producers, the trail strengthens community ties and promotes sustainable practices.

Ultimately, the Scooped: An Ice Cream Trail offers more than just a sweet treat. It represents a concerted effort to support Pennsylvania’s dairy farmers, boost local economies, and provide families with memorable summer experiences. As visitors explore the creameries, they contribute to a thriving agricultural sector and enjoy a taste of Pennsylvania’s rich dairy tradition.
