UWCHLAN TOWNSHIP, PA — In an exciting blend of education and adventure, 10 kindergarteners from Great Beginnings Christian Preschool & Kindergarten embarked on a historical journey at the Edith P. Moore schoolhouse on November 6th. This unique experience was hosted by the Uwchlan Township Historical Commission, providing a rare opportunity for the students to immerse themselves in the past.

Upon arrival, the children were greeted with the sight of outhouses and a water pump – essential utilities of a time when running water was not available. The students recited the pledge of allegiance together, marking their entry into a bygone era as they stepped through the doors of the historic schoolhouse.

Inside, the young learners found themselves seated at wooden desks, just as students did over a century ago. They were introduced to the realities of rural living, learning about agricultural practices of the past and the chores children completed before heading off to school.

The day was packed with engaging activities that brought history to life. From hearing the original school bell ring to writing on slates with chalk, each experience offered a glimpse into the past. The children played games and handled toys from the era, and even discovered the school’s unique fire escape – a set of stairs leading straight out the classroom window!

The Uwchlan Township Historical Commission, established in 1975, is dedicated to promoting historic preservation within the township. Owning two historic properties, the Edith P. Moore School House and the Cadwalader House, the Commission continues its mission to preserve and share the rich history of the area. Inside the Cadwalader House, visitors will find the Frances Matthews Library, an archive of historical documents from the Township’s past.

If you’re interested in stepping back in time and experiencing these historical gems, the Uwchlan Township Historical Commission welcomes group visits.
