PHILADELPHIA, PA — Pennie, Pennsylvania’s official health insurance marketplace, kicked off its annual Open Enrollment Period yesterday at the Maria de los Santos Health Center in Philadelphia. Representatives from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID), the Pennie Health Insurance Marketplace, and the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) were present to celebrate the start of this crucial period and emphasize the importance of securing quality health coverage for 2024.
The Open Enrollment Period, which began on November 1 and will run through December 15, provides Pennsylvanians with a window to compare and select from a range of quality health plans at the lowest costs available through Pennie. Even those who have previously explored their options are encouraged to review them again, as plan offerings and prices change each year.
“Pennsylvania’s Insurance Department’s goal of increased competition in the Marketplace has resulted in more choices, and increased affordability for consumers across the Commonwealth,” said Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys. “Quality, comprehensive health care coverage has never been more affordable, or more within reach for Pennsylvanians.”
Currently, nine out of ten Pennie enrollees qualify for financial savings, reducing their cost of coverage and care by over $500 a month on average.
Pennie is also the only marketplace where Pennsylvanians can avail themselves of these financial savings. The high-quality plans offered through Pennie are guaranteed to provide important benefits, including coverage for pre-existing conditions and free preventive services.
“The Philadelphia region has more people without coverage than any other part of Pennsylvania,” noted Pennie Executive Director Devon Trolley. “Having health coverage means protecting your health and your wallet. We encourage any Pennsylvanian without health insurance to start the new year with the peace of mind that comes with having coverage.”
Dr. Val Arkoosh, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, also emphasized the importance of coverage. “Your health is too important to go without coverage, and fortunately, Pennsylvanians have options,” she said.
For those no longer eligible for Medicaid or without any health coverage at all, the Open Enrollment period presents an optimal time to choose a new plan through Pennie, ensuring the best cost savings and coverage for the upcoming year.
