WEST CHESTER, PA — In a bid to inspire and empower the next generation of women scientists, West Chester University (WCU) is hosting its annual Super Science Saturday on November 4. Over 40 WCU women, STEM undergraduates will spend the day guiding girls in grades 6-12 through interactive projects and experiments, nurturing their scientific curiosity and career aspirations.
This free event, held at the Merion Science Center located at 750 South Church Street, is designed to boost the girls’ confidence in their ability to be scientists. It provides inspiration through role models and engages them in hands-on activities that make science both accessible and fun.
This year’s event, coordinated by Karen Schwarz, professor of Earth and Space Sciences and Director of the WCU Planetarium, sees participation from 17 WCU female STEM faculty members, in addition to the dedicated WCU undergraduates. Schwarz has also successfully recruited women from Dow Chemical to lead an experiment, and a group of women from the American Association of University Women to host a science station.
Throughout the day, the young participants will be divided into small groups and guided by a WCU student leader through various science stations. Here, they will engage in hands-on activities led by WCU STEM faculty and other women scientists. The event also allows for direct interaction with the scientists, fostering an environment of open dialogue and learning.
Adding to the excitement of the day, there will be a Q&A session and raffle prizes. Lunch will be provided for all participants, ensuring a full day of scientific exploration from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
