KENNETT SQUARE, PA — The Kennett Trails Alliance, Brandywine Red Clay Alliance, and officials from the township are set to break ground on new segments of the Kennett Greenway. The ceremony will take place at the Chandler Mill Nature Preserve on Monday, October 23.
The ambitious $2.7 million project aims to enhance the existing road infrastructure on Chandler Mill Road, which has been under threat from creek erosion. At the same time, it will create new facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, marking a significant step towards improving connectivity in the township.
The Chandler Mill Greenway project includes extensive streambank and roadway stabilization along numerous sections of the West Branch of the Red Clay Creek, some of which currently border the Chandler Mill roadway. A half-mile stretch of the Greenway will be constructed along the newly reinforced road bank. The project also includes the planting of native trees, improved stormwater management, riparian buffers, and a new accessible overlook at Chandler Mill Nature Preserve.
Once completed, the project promises to provide Kennett Township residents with new walkable and bikeable links. The northernmost segment of the construction will connect the Falcon’s Lair community to the Parrish Trail, Pennock Park, and the under-construction Kennett Bike Park. The second segment will link Round Hill Road to a new accessible overlook on the Chandler Mill Nature Preserve, offering views of the historic ruins of the Chandler Mill. Future phases of the Greenway construction will further connect residents to the Borough of Kennett Square.
JVI Group, Inc., a York Springs-based company, is undertaking the construction of the Chandler Mill Trail project. The design and engineering team, led by the nationally-recognized environmental consulting firm Biohabitats, also includes Unknown Studio and McMahon & Associates, a Bowman Company.
The community is invited to join the groundbreaking event and learn more about this transformative project. Attendees can look forward to light refreshments, including apple cider and donuts. The groundbreaking will take place at 541 Chandler Mill Road, Avondale, PA, with parking available in the lot for Chandler Mill Nature Preserve.
This project represents a significant stride towards better community connectivity, enhanced recreational facilities, and improved infrastructure in Kennett Township. It’s an exciting time for residents and local officials alike as they look forward to the benefits that the new segments of the Kennett Greenway will bring.
