Commonwealth Should Ban Red-Light and Speed Cameras

EDITOR: I saw Governor Wolf promoting red-light and speed cameras, when in reality, he should have done the opposite and pushed to get rid of them.

All forms of automated traffic enforcement should be repealed. The laws do not require things like 85th percentile speed limits, longer yellow lights, using the zipper merge, only targeting egregious violators, etc.

With the speed cameras, various studies over the years have shown that low-speed limits can cause safety problems. Same with short yellow lights for red-light cameras.

There have been a variety of instances nationwide of errors that have occurred with cameras of various types too. The state wants money. Many things can be done in both Philly and in work zones to improve safety without cameras.

The grant programs promote all of this to continue, in order to fund various projects, some of which could be worthwhile. We need to raise money through normal means, and use best-practice engineering and enforcement.
